Make This Drink: The Cosmopolitan

Bartender from the 1960s

The cosmopolitan cocktail, often referred to as the "Cosmo," is a vibrant and popular drink known for its striking pink hue and refreshing taste. It is believed to have originated in the 1970s or 1980s, with its exact birthplace being a topic of debate among cocktail enthusiasts. While some credit its creation to a bartender in Miami, others claim it was first concocted in San Francisco. But the true story goes that the cocktail we know today was crafted by bartender Toby Cecchini at the Odeon in New York City in the late 1980s. While is popularity quickly grew and waned the cosmopolitan experienced a surge in popularity during the 1990s, largely due to its frequent appearance on the hit TV show "Sex and the City." The drink became synonymous with the show's fashionable and cosmopolitan characters, leading to a widespread demand for this chic cocktail in bars and lounges across the world.

The classic cosmopolitan recipe includes vodka, triple sec, cranberry juice, and freshly squeezed lime juice. These ingredients come together to create a perfect balance of sweet and tart flavors, making it a delightful choice for those with a penchant for fruity cocktails. The addition of a twist of lemon or a few cranberries as garnish adds an extra touch of sophistication to this already elegant drink.

Over the years, mixologists and bartenders have put their own spin on the cosmopolitan cocktail by incorporating innovative ingredients and techniques. Variations such as the "elderflower cosmopolitan" or the "ginger-infused cosmopolitan" have emerged, offering cocktail enthusiasts a diverse range of options to suit their unique tastes.

Today, the cosmopolitan remains a beloved classic in the world of mixology, enjoyed by both seasoned cocktail aficionados and casual drinkers alike. Whether sipped at a trendy bar in a bustling city or shaken up at home for a girls' night in, the cosmopolitan continues to captivate with its timeless appeal and refreshing taste.
