Make This Drink: The Vesper

Bartender from the 1960s

In the world of classic cocktails, few are as enigmatic and alluring as the Vesper.

The Vesper cocktail was created by Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond, in his first 1953 novel, "Casino Royale." The cocktail was introduced in a casino scene where James Bond orders it, stating, "A dry martini. In a deep champagne goblet. Three measures of Gordon's, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it's ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon peel." This iconic introduction has made the Vesper cocktail a timeless beverage associated with sophistication and intrigue.

What sets the Vesper apart from other classic cocktails is its mystique and association with the iconic character of James Bond. The cocktail's combination of gin and vodka creates a potent yet sophisticated blend that has captivated cocktail enthusiasts and Bond fans alike. The Vesper's unique blend of flavors, coupled with its intriguing history, continues to make it a sought-after drink in both classic cocktail bars and modern mixology scenes.

To craft a proper Vesper one must pay careful attention to the proportions and ingredients. Using a high-quality London dry gin, premium vodka, and Lillet Blanc is essential to capturing the true essence of this cocktail. For the purist it should be noted that Kina Lillet, which was used in the original recipe was reformulated and later rebranded as Lillet Blanc resulting in a slightly sweeter and smoother taste. The Vesper is traditionally shaken to achieve the desired chill and dilution, resulting in a refreshing and balanced libation that embodies the allure of James Bond's world.

The history of the Vesper cocktail is a tale of intrigue, evolution, and enduring appeal. As a testament to its timelessness, the Vesper continues to capture the imagination of cocktail aficionados and remains a beloved libation that pays homage to the iconic legacy of James Bond.
